ABOUT THE PROFESSION

In this regard, new tasks arise in training highly qualified personnel capable of creatively solving theoretical and practical problems of professional activity in modern conditions. A specialist in international relations is distinguished by erudition, extensive knowledge in history, theory of international relations and world politics, proficiency in foreign languages.

The profession of an international specialist opens up wide opportunities for career development both in government agencies (ministries of foreign affairs, foreign economic services) and in the private sector (international companies, consulting firms).

PRACTICAL TRAINING AND INTERNSHIPS

Practical training in the study process

Students actively participate in writing scientific publications, holding Russian and international scientific conferences, whose results can be accepted for publication as part of one of the faculty collections.

In the process of mastering disciplines, students improve their research skills, conduct and coordinate analytical work in the field of international contacts with the development of expert opinions and practical recommendations; develop skills in searching for and applying promising information and communication technologies and software to comprehensively formulate and solve professional tasks.

During the internship, students receive unique opportunities to acquire experience and skills in international interaction and cooperation, as well as the ability to assess, model and predict global, macro regional, national and state, regional and local political and cultural, socio-economic and socio-political processes based on the use of theoretical and empirical research methods and applied analysis.

Practical training and internship venues

A number of practical classes on the disciplines of Quantitative Analysis of Situational Models in World Policy, Theory and Practice of Diplomacy are held at the Department of Theory and History of International Relations with the participation of career diplomats from foreign countries and Russia.

International students are actively recruited for internships by national embassies, consulates and other foreign missions in the territory of the Russian Federation and abroad.

RESEARCH

During their master’s studies, many students begin to actively engage in scientific activities. Especially for this purpose, the Department of Theory and History of International Relations regularly publishes a collection of scientific reports. Many of the master’s graduates subsequently continue their education in the English-language postgraduate programme of the Department of Theory and History of International Relations and successfully defend their PhD theses, including Tafotie Deffo Jerry Rowlings (Cameroon), Indiana Pejic (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Amuhaja Claire Ayuma (Kenya), Cheng Guo (China), Adebayo Kafilath Motunrayo (Nigeria), etc.

Following the research focus of the master’s programme (security-development nexus), graduates develop it in their postgraduate programme focusing on the study of peacekeeping activities, resolution of international conflicts, development problems and regional integration in the countries of the Global South.

Students and graduates of the master’s programme regularly participate in regular research workshops of the Department of Theory and History of International Relations:

  • 2018–2020 — 8 research workshops on non-Western theories of international relations;
  • 2021–2022 — 8 research workshops on non-Western peacekeeping;
  • since 2023 — a research workshops on non-Western regionalism;
  • since 2024 — 4 research workshops on the geopolitics of the countries of the Global South.
